VMserver 1.0.8 Installationsfrage unter Debian5 (NetInstall)

Hallo,

untenstehende "Installationsanleitung" hat bei mir unter Debian 4/Etch gut funktioniert.
Durch ein "Missgeschickt" habe ich meine Debian 4 / VMserver 1.0.9 Test-Installation
abgeschossen und kann deshalb keine dist-upgrade auf Lenny5 mehr machen...

Offenbar unterstuetzt Debian 5/Lenny nicht mehr alle Nertzwerkkarten und man wird aufgefordert,
zusaetzliche "Firmware" fuer den nicht supporteten Broadcom NetExtreme II BCM5708 aus dem
"non-free repository" herunterzuladen. Wie das waeherend der Installation ab NetInstall CD
gemacht wird weiss ich noch nicht...


Jetzt aber zu meiner eigentlichen Frage:
(damit ich abschaetzen kann, ob es sich lohnt, noch mehr Zeit in die 5/Lenny-Installation zu investieren)

Kann VMware 1.0.8 gemaess der untenstehenden Anleitung auch unter Debian 5
installiert werden, oder fehlen auf 5/Lenny die richtige Compiler-Version um
VMserver einfach installieren zu koennen?

2. VMWare runterladen, das binary, inkl. MUI
3. Debian aktualisieren:

apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` libx11-6 libx11-dev x-window-system-core x-window-system xspecs libxtst6 psmisc build-essential libxrender1 psmisc
für amd64
apt-get install xorg-dev xinetd linux-headers-2.6-amd64 xinetd build-essential make autoconf libtool flex bison gcc g++ gdb ia32-libs psmisc
4. vmware installieren
tar xvfz VMware-server-*.tar.gz
cd vmware-server-distrib
./vmware-install.pl
5. mui installieren
tar xvfz VMware-mui-*.tar.gz
cd vmware-mui-distrib
./vmware-install.pl

Und schon sollte es gehen!

auch mit GCC 4.1 bricht die VMserver-Installation ab

Hallo
die Sache mit der VMserver 1.0.8 Installation auf Debian Lenny/5 (Kernel 2.6.26-2-686) sieht leider nicht so positiv aus :-(

Waehrend der Installation kommt die Fehlermeldung "Your Kernel was built with "ggc"
version "4.1.3" while you are trying to use "/usr/bin/gcc" version "4.3.2". This configuration
is not recommended....

Deshlab habe ich - zwecks Verwendung eines alten GCC - folgende Befehle
eingegeben.

export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.1
echo $CC

Trotzdem bricht die Installationsroutine(./vmware-install.pl) bei "unable to build vmon modules" ab.
Ausserdem wird man auf http://vmware.com/support/refernce/linu ... linux.html
hingewiesen, danach wird "Execution aborted" angezeigt (leider scheint es diese Seite nicht mehr zu geben).

In diversen Posts wird noch auf den Patch vmware-any-update hingewiesen....

Was soll ich tun?

Deine Anleitung hat mich total gefreut. Das war wohl "Rettung" in letzter Minute, denn ich war nahe daran aufzugeben..

Eine kleine Frage habe ich noch, bevor ich mein System (wieder) verbiege:

Gehe ich richtig in der Annahme, dass diese 2 Befehle vor der eigentlichen Installation von VMserver eigegeben werden muessen?

1. (vmware-any-any-update117d installieren)
# cd ..
# tar zxvf vmware-any-any-update117d.tar.gz
# cd vmware-any-any-update117d
# ./runme.pl


2.
# ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc4.1 /usr/bin/gcc

ich bin der Meinung genau nach http://wiki.secured.de/dokuwiki/server1/install-2-6-26
vorgangen zu sein. Trotzdem funktioniert die Sache nicht... Also, so bin ich vorgegangen:

# tar zxvf VMware-server-1.0.8-126538.tar.gz
# cd vmware-server-distrib
# ./vmware-install.pl

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it by
invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl". Do you want this
program to invoke the command for you now? [yes] no

# cd ..
# tar zxvf vmware-any-any-update117d.tar.gz
# cd vmware-any-any-update117d
# ./runme.pl
(dies scheint funktioniert zu haben, kann mich aber nicht mehr an den genauen Wortlaut der Meldung erinnern)

und danach

# ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc4.1 /usr/bin/gcc

# ./vmware-config.pl

dann kommt mal die Meldung:
"using compiler "/usr/bin/gcc-4.1" Use environment variable to override"
"what is the location of the directories of C header files that mach your running kernel?"
[/lib/modules/.2.6.26.2.686/build/include] YES

Was mache ich falsch?

Kann man eine solch verbogene Installation wieder gerade biegen, oder sollte auch das
Host OS wieder neu installiert werden?

Ok, verstehe dass mir mit diesen Angaben niemand im Forum helfen konnte...

Neuinstallation muss man wirklich in den seltensten Fällen machen. So richtig kaputt hab ich ein Debian/Ubuntu noch nie bekommen ^^


ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc4.1 /usr/bin/gcc

Mit dem Befehl sagst du deinem System das die Version 4.1 des Compilers generell benutzt werden soll wenn auf gcc zugegriffen wird.
Ich habe es nicht getestet ob mit der installierten Version 4.3.x eventuell auch funktioniert.

Funktioniert denn nun deine Installation?
Bekommst du immer noch Fehler bei dem erstellen der VMware Module?

Zuerst:
ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc4.1 /usr/bin/gcc
dann die runme.pl ausführen. Die startet auch gleich das Compilen der Module.

Danach sollte es eigentlich funktionieren.

Habe leider(?) zuerst ./runme.pl laufengelassen und erst nachher
# ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc-4.1 /usr/bin/gcc.
Soweit ich das beurteilen kann, wurden aber keine Fehler bei Erstellen der Module angezeigt. (siehe unten, die Logs scheinen aber auf ein Modul-Problem hinzuweisen)

Leider habe ich jetzt das Problem, dass falls in der VMware Server Console eine VM gestartet werden soll (respektive erst mal das Gast OS ab *.iso installiert werden soll) unmittelbar nach dem Mausklick auf den gruenen Pfeil (Power on) folgende Fehlermeldung angezeigt wird:

"The process exited with an error". End of message (unabhaengig ab VMserver Version 1.0.8 oder 1.0.9)

In diversen Foren wird darauf hingewiesen, dass es moeglichweise etwas mit Permissions nach dem Kernelupdate zu tun haben koennte. (chmod 600 *vmdk, chmod 600 *vmsd,chmod 600 *vmx) hat aber nichts gebraucht.

bist du sicher das die module alle korrekt compiliert wurden?
Das Logfile sagt aus das du 1.0.9 verwendest, hast du hierfür auch den Patch ausgeführt und dann die Module neu erstellen lassen?

Nachdem es mit 1.0.8 nicht funktioniert (gleiche Situation wie in meinem letzten Post beschrieben) habe ich 1.0.9 installiert).


Nach ./runme-pl kommen folgende Meldungen:

-updating /urs/bin/vmware-config.pl ... now patched
- .../urs/bin... No patch needed/available
- .../vmnet-bridge ... No patch needed/available
-/usr/lib/vmware/bin/vmware-vmx... No patch needed/available
-/usr/lib/vmware/bin-debug/vmware-vmx... No patch needed/available
-vmware modules in "/ust/lib/vmware/modules/source" has been updated


Da ich im ersten Installations-Versuch erst nach ./runme.pl auf GCC-4.1 verlinkt hat,
habe ich VMserver 1.0.9 deinstalliert und noch einmal installiert. Das Log ist immer
noch sehr gross..

Nachdem du die runme.pl aufgerufen hast muss darauf vmware-config.pl ausgefühtr werden.

Ich war der Meinung das dies durch das runme.pl Skript schon automatisch erledigt wird.
Falls nicht, dann bitte starte vmware-config.pl erst dann werden die Module kompiliert.

Hallo

eigentlich wollte ich aufgeben.. Aber nachdem ich VMserver201 ueber Mittag auf ein frisch installiertes
Debian Lenny installiert habe und mit diesem WebUI haette "arbeiten" sollen, ist mir der
Appetit auf VMserver 2 fuer alle Ewigkeit vergangen :-(

Danach habe ich die Festplatte ge-wiped, Debian Lenny und danach VMserver 1.0.9
fogendermassen neu installiert:


# tar zxvf VMware-server-VMware-server-1.0.9-156507.tar.gz
# cd vmware-server-distrib
# ./vmware-install.pl

Before running VMware Server for the first time, you need to configure it by
invoking the following command: "/usr/bin/vmware-config.pl". Do you want this
program to invoke the command for you now? [yes] no

# ln -sf /usr/bin/gcc-4.1 /usr/bin/gcc

# cd ..
# tar zxvf vmware-any-any-update117d.tar.gz
# cd vmware-any-any-update117d
# ./runme.pl

# cd vmware-server-distrib
# ./vmware-config.pl

Danach habe ich dann noch die MUI installiert...


Die gleichen Probleme wie oben in den heutigen Post beschrieben bestehen weiter :-(


Langsam aber sicher sollte das Teil laufen. So bleibt mir vermutlich nichts anderes uebrig
als morgen ESXi40 zu installieren ....

Hab mir zum besseren Lesen, den Fred mal ausgedruckt...39Seiten im FF :roll:

Wenn du nach dem Fehler aus deinem Log suchst
Version mismatch with vmmon module: expecting 138.0, got 168.0
findest du jede Menge Postings zum Kernel 2.6.26/27. Im Endeffekt läßt sich der Fehler wohl nur mit dem passenden Any-Any-Patch aus der Welt schaffen. Gut möglich, daß bei Lenny der Kernel schon wieder zu neu ist und ein neuer Patch noch kommen müßte.

Hab leider gerade kein Echtsystem hier wo ich das mal eben probieren könnte.
Aber die 1.0.9er Version soll unter Lenny mit diesem Patch und auch diesem Patch laufen.

Ich verstehe irgendwie nicht, weshalb bei "elgato319" die Inst klappt und bei "hans123" komplett gegen den Baum läuft.
Weiß jemand, ob bei Lenny schon einige Updates seit dessen Veröffentlichung nachgereicht wurden?

Ich vermute mal das bei mir noch ein älterer Kernel im Einsatz gewesen ist wo der any-any Patch noch funktionierte.

Edit:
Ok, mit dem itpsycho-Patch funktioniert alles wunderbar auf einem ganz aktuellen Debian-Lenny.
g++ muss allerdings noch nachinstalliert werden, ist aber kein Problem.

Habe den Wiki Eintrag bei mir auch entsprechende angepasst.

Zuerst mal ganz herzlichen Dank fuer Eure Hilfe! Ich hatte zwar gestern schon ESXi4 installiert, aber nachdem ich heute morgen
den neuen Post von elgato319 gesehen habe, dachte ich mir halt, nach all der Hilfe Die Ihr mir gegeben habt, muesse es
doch noch Platz fuer einen letzten Versuch geben :-)

Wie ist das jetzt eigentlich, wenn ich die gleiche Installation in einem Jahr machen moechte,
kann ich davon ausgehen dass apt-get install noch alle benoetigen/richtigen Dateien auf dem
Netz findet?

Da Debian ja bei der Entwicklung nicht pausiert, wirst du in einem Jahr höchstwahrscheinlich in die selbe Kernel-Predouille laufen und brauchst dann wieder einen neuen Any-Any-Patch. Allerdings ist die Frage, ob die nächste Debian-Version schon wieder nach nur 10Monaten veröffentlicht wird...
Allgemein stellt sich dann auch die Frage, wielange VMware seinen Server1 noch mit Sicherheitspatches versorgt. Der 1.08er hatte ja nicht vollständig getrennte Speicherbereiche. Daher konnte ein Gast aus der Sandbox (VM) ausbrechen und doch die Hoheit über den Host erlangen. Diese Schwachstelle wurde mit dem 1.09er Release beseitigt.

Mittlererweile gibt es genug Host-OS, die vom Server1 zwar noch (offiziell und inoffiziell ist egal) unterstützt werden und deren Verkäufe & deren Versorgung mit Sicherheitspatches schon längst eingestellt wurden. Es ist daher wohl nur noch eine Frage der Zeit, bis der Server1 dem GSX-Server folgt.
Du wirst also irgendwann eh nicht mehr um den Server2 und seiner Unterstützung von neueren Host-OS herumkommen. Es sei denn VMware faßt sich ein Herz und/oder kommt mit einer Version 3, die wieder eine Console enthält.

Interessant, danke fuer die Hinweise. Ja manchmal hatte ich auch den Eindruck,
auf das falsche Pferd((1x) gesetzt zu haben..
Da ich aber den Network-Setup unter ESXi4 nicht auf anhin geschnallt habe, habe ich noch
einen(diesen) letzten Versuch mit VMserver 1.0.9 gemacht.

Nach der anfaenglichen Freude, dass VMserver 1.0.9 ueberhaupt installiert werden konnte,
ist jetzt die Ernuechterung gross, weil das urspruengliche Problem, dass die beiden VM's zwar
untereinander kommunizieren koennen aber nicht nach draussen ins
Internet (sieh Post "mehrere VMs ins gleiche Subnet legen (vmnet/bridged)" unter URL:
http://vmware-forum.de/viewtopic.php?t=16208) weiterhin besteht :-)

mich absolut nicht absehrbar ist, wie lange es noch dauern wuerde, bis das "Networking"
funktionieren wuerde... Oder?

Das Problem mit der 1.0.x Version ist ja nichts neues.
Würde eine Server Console für 2.x exisitieren die mit der 1.0.x mithalten kann hätten sicherlich schon viele Personen ihr System aktualisiert.

Ok, man kann auch den viClient benutzt, aber es ist einfach nicht das selbe.

In Zukunft bleibt wohl dann leider nur noch der Server 2.x, oder wenn man eine vernünftige Infrastruktur hat gleich auf den ESX4i zu gehen.

Ich würde als blanke Verzweiflungstat eher auf eine wegen der Sicherheit nur etwas ältere Distri setzen und dort den Server1.09 installieren. Wenn der Host nicht grad in einer DMZ steht oder als Root fungiert, dürfte es auch keine Sicherheitsprobleme geben. Zumindest solange du mit "Brain.exe" ausgestattet bist. :cool:
