Hi Guys
I have 2 vcenter and Therefore 2seperat MSSQL VMs.i want to cofigure HA. So My question is should i configure the VMs as MS Failover Cluster (for MSSQL with AlwaysON ) or should i configure a VMware Cluster in HA Mode?
Die Foren-SW läuft ohne erkennbare Probleme. Sollte doch etwas nicht funktionieren, bitte gerne hier jederzeit melden und wir kümmern uns zeitnah darum. Danke!

Hello,
first some informations about HA. The vSphere HA can protect any VM (or most of them) which also include vCenter (Windows or VCSA). The vCenter is needed for enabling and configure vSphere HA but its not needed for HA kicking in when a failure occurs. If a Host goes down which also runs vCenter VM its the job of the HA Master to manage the restart of the VMs on other Hosts.
But there might be a requirement for a vCenter with up to 99.99% availability if you run a VMware VIEW environment or vCD for example.
- I thought that a MSSQL server can only support a single vCenter and its not possible that 2 independend vCenter share the same MSSQL
- With vSphere 6.0 it should be supportet that a vCenter can use a MSSQL Cluster for the SQL Backend. But that doesnt protect the VPXD and the other vCenter services
- I think there also comes support to run vCenter in a MS Failover Cluster. But its not very common because the future of vCenter is the linux based VA and not the windows version. Check http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1024051
In the old vSphere 4.0-5.5 there was "vCenter Heartbeat" as extra product to realize high availability vCenter.

Joerg

Thx!!!
I run vcenter 6 with a seperate MSSQL Server and have this twice:
1vcenter and MSSQL for Test Environment
1vcenter and MSSQL for Production Environment
I Need high availibility over 95%. Actually i only have a Backup of the two MSSQL Servers, but if the os or the vom crashs the vcenter is down. I Need a Solution to make vcenter high available . I prefer the newest Innovation solution which is supportet from vmware.
I first thought to configure HA in Esx for MSSQL and vcenter Server. Also i thought about to use MS Failover Cluster configuration for all Servers cause they run on w2k12r2.
For me its not possible to use the new vcenter appliance which is now put since vmworld 2015.
What you recommend me? Should i use MS Failover Cluster for MSSQL and vcenter?????

The Environment Has more than 300vms. I use VMware automation to automatically provision new vms. I think the best for me is this (site17):

I want to be protectet against application and is failure and also be protected against hardware failure if a esx Crashs
