DirectPath I/O Configuration

Hallo

folgendes Problem: Ich habe eine SAS Karte an der eine Tapelibrary hängt als DirectPath konfiguriert. Nach dem Reboot ist diese nun komplett verschwunden. Kenn jemand dieses Problem und wie bekomme ich die Karte zurück?

Aus diesem Grund ist es auch nicht supportet und wie du nun bemerkt hast funtkioniert es auch nur unzuverlaessig.

Nun ja, nicht supportet ist das eine, komplett verschwinden das andere

Die kleinste Aenderung an FW, Software oder der Konfiguration und schon funktioniert PCI Pathtrough mit nicht supporteten Geraeten nicht mehr.

Was hast du denn geaendert bzw. warum wurde neugestartet?

Nun, ich habe die Karte eingebaut - war soweit auch zu sehen, alles fein. HP Tapedevice konnte ich auch durchreichen, der Wechsler wurde nicht gesehen. Also wollte ich testen ob es geht wenn ich die SAS Karte (separate karte) als Direct konfiguriere und dann dem Gast gebe. Nachdem ich die Karte als PassThrougt konfiguriert hatte sagte der ESX - bitte durchstarten. Hab ich auch gemacht und nun kommts - die Karte wird nirgendwo mehr angezeigt. Ich finde die noch nicht mal in der esx.conf

Also ging es noch nie.

Das mit dem Verbinden von SCSI Geraeten ist schwierig bei Geraeten welche mehrere bzw. sich eine LUN Teilen wie es bei einem AutoLoader/Changer der Fall sein kann.

Gibt es die Moeglichkeit das PCI Passtrough wieder zu deaktivieren damit man den HBA wieder sichtbar bekommt?

Genau das geht nicht. Die Kate wird nicht bei den Passthrough Gerätn angezeigt und auch nicht bei den anderen. Die ist einfach verschwunden. In der esx.conf steht sie auch nicht drin, auch nicht als passthru

Dann laß das Tape doch mal ab und starte den Host neu. Mit etwas Glück könnte der Eintrag dann auch aus allen anderen Config-Dateien verschwunden sein und wird dir vielleicht wieder angeboten.
Falls nicht, würde ich die Rumfrickelei mit Passthrough sein lassen und das Tape direkt in einen weiteren Rechner verfrachten. Hier haben einige mit deiner Config mal Glück gehabt, aber Passthrough ist so schon keine wirklich stabile Sache oder zumindest nur für die wenigen von VMware offiziell gelisteten Passthrough-Geräte. Speziell der 5.5er hat sich da recht kleinlich bei Passthrough...

Dann schau doch erst einmal mit lspci oder auch mit einer gebooteten Linux-Live-CD (oder Stick), ob der Controller selbst nicht eventuell einen Schaden hat...
Ich gehe hier selbstverstaendlich davon aus, dass an dem Controller nur das Bandlaufwerk haengt, und nichts anderes.

Neben dem von "JustMe" gesagten, würde ich trotzdem einen weiteren Server nur mit dem Tape aufsetzen. Damit lebst du auf lange Sicht ruhiger, da Passthrough seit vSphere4 irgendwie immer wackeliger wurde. Spätestens mit Veröffentlichung von Win-Server2k13 wird VMware wieder ein Upgrade rausbringen, um auch dieses OS zu unterstützen und dann kannst du mit deiner Passthrough-Config wieder Schiffbruch erleiden.

Auf der anderen Seite stelle ich mir gerade die Frage, weshlab du überhaupt den P212 durchreichen willst. Der P212 wird offiziell erstmal nur in HP-Servern unterstützt und zum Durchreichen wäre mir der viel zu schade( falls er nicht eh rumliegt), da er auch eine BBU anbinden kann.

Also ich persönlich würde mir eine SAS-Karte suchen, welche sicher durchgereicht wird. Diese sollte ein stinknormaler HBA sein. Habe es noch nicht erlebt, dass diese für Passtrough nicht funktioniert haben. --> LSI-HBA. Diese kannst ja durchreichen bevor die TapeLibrary angeschlossen ist.

Eine Tapelibrary die daran angeschlossen ist, dürfte dann wohl mit grosser Wahrscheinlichkeit auch funktionieren.

Bei den vielen Problemen den Leute mit diesen Dingern haben, würde ich das allerdings bleiben lassen und nen physischen Host nehmen. Vor allem sägst Du mit dem Host ja immer auch am Bein des Backups, nicht nur an den Produktiv-VM's. Das fände ich nicht prickelnd.
