press ALT-F1 and logon at the VMWare Server Console
enter the command :
#esxcfg-scsidevs -a
if scsi controller ist successfully detected the controller is reported as vmhbaX ( X=0..9) and the driver aic79xx is named
then enter the sequence :
esxcli storage nmp satp rule add --satp VMW_SATP_LOCAL --driver="aic79xx" --description="AHA 29320 LPE"
after rescanning the vmhba devices via VIClient the tape drive should be addable to the VM ...
