Hallo,

habe FreeNAS als Gast laufen (Windows Server 2003 Host, VMserver 2), auf einer USB 2.0 Festplatte am Host einen neuen Datastore eingerichtet mit einer 8GB-Test-Platte die FreeNAS zur Verfügung steht.
Die Installation von FreeNAS liegt auf einem anderen Datastore (interne Festplatte).

Wenn ich jetzt per Netzwerk (100MBit) eine 1,07GB grosse Datei auf eine Freigabe (liegt am Datastore der USB Platte) kopiere, komme ich gerade mal auf eine Geschwindigkeit von 4MB/s.
Das ist nicht sonderlich viel, vor allem deswegen, weil wenn ich auf dem Datastore der internen Festplatte eine 8GB-Test-Platte für FreeNAS einrichte, etwas mehr als 6MB/s möglich sind.

Eigentlich war ich davon ausgegangen, durch die USB Festplatte die Performance zu steigern, hat aber ganz das Gegenteil bewirkt.

Wo könnte ich ansetzen um die Performance etwas zu steigern?
Das kopieren der 1,07GB Testdatei am Host von der internen Platte auf die USB-Platte dauert gerade mal 5 Sekunden.

Mit der Einstellung virtualHW.version = "4" wird das natürlich nichts, du brauchst mindestens Version 6. HW-Version 4 unterstützt nur USB1.1, aber das steht ja so auch im Handbuch.
Daher wirst du um ein Upgrade der v.HW deiner VM nicht rumkommen. Wie das abläuft, steht im Sticky-Posting namens Wichtig: VMserver 2.x, das Hardware-Upgrade und und VI-Client. ;)

Auf der USB Platte ist aber nur ein Datastore angelegt, die Platte wird nicht ins Gast-OS verbunden.

Hat die HW-Version trotzdem Einfluss?

Dann natürlich nicht, allerdings sind 96MB Arbeitsspeicher selbst für FreeNAS auch nicht grad viel und der Datenträgerzugriff ist das Nadelöhr des VMserver. ;)
Du schreibst auch leider nichts zur HW des Hosts oder der sonstigen Konfig von VMware. Poste doch einfach mal den Inhalt der aktuellen vmware.log-Datei aus dem Ordner dieser VM. Dann sehen wir hoffentlich weiter.

Hab das HW-Version Upgrade für die FreeNAS VM trotzdem mal gemacht ;)

Host-OS und Vmware sind auf einer SSD

FreeNAS sagt trotz 96MB, es wären nur 30% "in use".

Deine Config seitens VMserver ist ja nicht sehr umfangreich. Keine Ahnung welche Voreinstellungen diese VMserver-Version diesmal hat.

Füg mal bitte in die "config.ini" bei beendeten VMware-Diensten und/oder in die *.vmx-Datei noch diese Parameter ein:

Eine Erklärung für alle Parameter findet sich am einfachsten unter dem Stichwort swappiness. Bei Swappiness gehts zwar vorrangig um die Optimierung von Linux-Hosts, allerdings werden auch alle Parameter erklärt. Die Parameter in die config.ini eingetragen, wirken sich dabei Systemweit für alle VMs aus.

PS: Wo ist dein USB-LW "i" ?

Habe grade eben mal versucht mittels FTP und FlashFXP das Testfile in der Gegend herumzukopieren... :roll:

Filegröße: 1,07 GB
von PC zu FreeNAS:
10,82 MB -> Datastore interne HDD
10,87 MB -> Datastore externe USB HDD
von FreeNAS zu PC:
9,61 MB -> Datastore interne HDD
9,52 MB -> Datastore externe USB HDD

Die Werte wurden von FlashFXP gemessen, dürften somit schon seine Richtigkeit haben.
Also kann ich mit der IO Leistung meiner VM wohl doch ganz zufrieden sein :grin:

In einem 100MBit Nezwerk wird nicht viel mehr möglich sein, ohne an die Grenzen der Spezifikation zu stoßen. Was die schlechten Werte beim Kopieren über SMS/Windows-Dateifreigabe betrifft, ist scheinbar schlicht und einfach das Protokoll am übermäßigen Overhead schuld.

Ich war mir nur überhaupt nicht darüber im klaren, dass FTP um so viel schneller ist.
