Hallo zusammen,

anbei mein erster Post. (Hoffe dass ich dabei keine Regeln hier breche)

Beim Starten einer VM kommt folgendes:

Das Starten der virtuellen Maschine ist fehlgeschlagen.
Einschalten des Moduls Disk fehlgeschlagen.
Die Festplatte '/vmfs/volumes/55a7c30e-b2691c04-57ee-a01d48c70bec/WD2DWCC4E0CZLTA4.vmdk' oder eine der Snapshot-Festplatten, auf die sie angewiesen ist, konnte nicht geöffnet werden.
Datei konnte nicht gesperrt werden


Die VM soll direkt auf 4 WD-RED Platten zugreifen.

So sieht es im FS aus.

Alle Platten habe ich genau gleich angelegt. Und nur diese eine macht Zicken.
Würde mich über einen Tipp freuen.

ed:
Ziel ist es die vier Platten 1:1 den NAS4Free bereitzustellen. NAS4Free soll darüber dann ein ZFS Filesystem aufbauen.

Auf der Maschine läuft IP-Fire produktiv mit mehreren Aufgaben. NAS4Free soll erst mal eine Zeit lang als Test laufen und dann schrittweise den Fileserver , usw ersetzen...

Und das heisst, dass, wenn dieses RDM aus der VM-Config entfernt wird, dann funktionieren die anderen drei?
Oder kommt dann die Meldung einfach nur fuer das naechste RDM, z.B. die ...SJA51R?

An was fuer einem Controller haengen die 4 SATA-Disks?

Lassen sich die veir Platten einzeln vom ESXi selber ansprechen?

Hast Du schon probiert, die RDMs nicht im FS-Root, sondern in einem Unterverzeichnis anzulegen (so, wie VMs konfiguriert werden)?

Ach ja: Wenn es wirklich nur die eine betreffen sollte, hast Du mal geschaut, wer sonst die Datei moeglicherweise locken koennte bzw. gelockt haben koennte?

Die RDM Pointer habe ich übrigens so angelegt:
vmkfstools -z /vmfs/devices/disks/<DiskName> /vmfs/volumes/<Datastore>/<Folder>/<Disk>.vmdk


Die betroffene Festplatte selbst zeigt im PC angeschlossen übrigens keinerlei Probleme.

Na ja,
wenn die Physik in Ordung ist ist das schon mal ein Ausschluss. Könnte ja sein das die Platte schon anfängt Sektoren zu sperren und warum auch immer ESX damit ein Problem bekommt.
Ich mache hier immer wieder die Erfahrung das Plattenzugriffe unter ESX deutlich schneller fehlschlagen wenn die Platte erste Fehler hat die unter Windiows noch ignoriert werden.
Nicht das sich damit ein Problem hätte. Ich kalkuliere in meinen Testumgebungen sowieso das die Platten maximal 2 Jahre halten.Dann tausche ich sie routinemässig durch.
Ich suche noch immer einen Weg unter ESX vernünftig an SMART Informationen der Platten zu kommen.

Sowas klappt so richtig eigentlich nur über den Controller, sofern dieser Werte einzelner Platten durchreicht. Der ESXi sieht ja nur das entstandene Volume.
Controllertechnisch wärest du dann preislich aber in der Oberliga und bei Areca angekommen. Diese bieten über einen RJ45-Anschluß am Controller solche Managementfähigkeiten an und sind nach erneuter, längerer Suche anscheinend auch die einzigsten, die sowas für die Allgemeinheit überhaupt anbieten.

Die andere Möglichkeit besteht darin, einen Gast das Storage in SW verwalten zu lassen und den Speicherplatz dem ESXi per NFS oder iSCSI wieder anzubieten. Für sowas würde ich dann ZFS oder BTRFS aufgrund ihres Aufbaus und ihrer Möglichkeiten bevorzugen.
Alternativ nimmt man ein NAS für geringere Performanceansprüche (zumindest QNAP bietet in seiner Web-Oberfläche wohl die Ausgabe der SMART-Werte an) oder investiert in ein SAN. Für weitergehende ESXi-Funktionen wird ja sowieso ein "Shared Storage" benötigt...

Sorry habe die Antwort oben beim Mobilzugriff übersehen.

Inzwischen zeigt der ESXi diese Platte nicht mehr an bei "ls -l /vmfs/devices/disks". (Habe zwei Platten vertauscht um zu sehen ob der Fehler mitwandert)
Daher habe ich eine neue Platte bestellt.

Es war so, dass die VM mit 3 der 4 Platten zu starten war und der Fehler nur wenn diese genutzt werden soll hochkam. Die Platten konnte ich nur in einem bestehenden Verzeichnis anlegen. Ein mkdir wurde mir (als root) verweigert. Die Datei kann eigentlich gar nicht gelockt sein, denn es ist ein neuer ESXi-Server mit 2 VMs. Die erste ist nur "Firewall" ohne jeden Kontakt zu den vier WD-Platten. Nur die zweite VM soll die 4 Platten direkt untergeschoben bekommen...

Hoffe dass es mit der neuen Platte dann spielt. Danke schon mal für eure Antworten. Ich gebe ein Update wenn die neue Platte da ist.


ed: in der neuen VM soll dann NAS4Free laufen (also ZFS mit direktem Zugriff auf die Platten), Ob SMART auch funktioniert weiss ich nicht. Wollte ich testen. Auch die Performance will ich erst mal sehen...

Wovon startet dein ESXi?
Eventuell nutzt der ESXi die unwillige Platte als Speicherplatz für seine Logs. Eigentlich müßte er sich dann bereits bei der RDM-Erstellung beschweren, aber die Version 6 hat noch ein paar Bugs.

Hallo,

was sagt den SMART zum Status der Platte?

Unter ESX kannst du den Status mit folgendem Befehl abfragen.
/usr/lib/vmware/vm-support/bin/smartinfo.sh

Vielleicht gibt das ja ein paar zusätzliche Informationen preis.

Hi,

wie geschrieben hat die Platte gar nicht mehr reagiert und ging daher zurück (definitiv defekt). Nun habe ich die neue Platte eingebaut und bin wieder beim zweiten Problem.

Der ESXi bootet von SSD (250GB, nur ein Bruchteil bisher genutzt)

Zum Thema Logs habe ich nun zwei Themen auf die SSD umgebogen:
A) Host-->Konfiguration-->Erweiterte Einstellungen-->ScratchConfig
B) Syslog.global.logDir habe ich auch gezielt auf die SSD gebogen

Damit hatte ich dann wie es bis jetzt aussieht Erfolg. (Aber erst nach einen Reboot)
Ich habe zwar reichlich Linux Erfahrung, aber für den ESXi muss ich erst ein Gefühl bekommen. Zum Beispiel war mir das oben genannte SMART Script neu.

In dem HP Microserver stecken 10GB RAM und bis jetzt nur die Celeron CPU vom Werk. Aber trotzdem wundert mich wie bockig das System bis jetzt läuft. Zum Beispiel warte ich gerade schon 15 Minuten auf einen Reset der neuen VM...

Langsam weiss ich nicht mehr weiter...
Kann ich denn herausfinden was genau die betroffene Platte sperrt ?
Würde es Sinn machen wenn ich auf ESXi 5.5 Downgrade ?[/quote]

Hallo,

wenn du von einem Reboot sprichst, meinst du dann deine VM oder den ESXi Server?

Du kannst dir ja mal (neben SMART) einige Statistiken ziehen.

Rebootet habe ich den Host.
1. Wenn ich zuerst die neue "NAS" VM starte, dann kommt der Fehler wegen dem Sperren nicht,
2. Wenn ich dann erst die Firewall-VM starte: auch gut.

3. Wenn ich dann die NAS VM beende und eine Weile warte und dann wieder versuche zu starten kommt wieder: "Die Festplatte '/vmfs/volumes/XXX.vmdk' oder eine der Snapshot-Festplatten, auf die sie angewiesen ist, konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Datei konnte nicht gesperrt werden"


Somit sehe ich zwei Probleme:
a) Was (vermutlich aus der Firewall-VM) sperrt mein VMDK/ Platte ?
b) Denke auch mit vmhba34 gibt es ein Problem. Nur ist mir unklar ob das ein HW Problem ist ist. vmhba34 liegt auf: t10.ATA_____WDC_WD40EFRX2D68WT0N0_________________________WD2DWCC4E3NA1C0X

Sehr eigenartig, die SMART Auswertung hängt nun schon 10 Minuten am Anfang der dritten Platte und geht nicht weiter (HW Problem ?):

Könnte sein, daß die Platte einen FW-Bug hat...
Wenn ich mich recht entsinne, gab es da in der Vergangenheit das Problem, daß bei der Abfrage der Smart-Werte der Datenträger nur unvollständig bzw zur Hälfte geantwortet hat bzw antworten konnte. Alle weiteren Anfrageversuche waren dann bis zum Ablauf einer Wartezeit verzögert oder überhaupt erst wieder nach einem Reboot möglich.


Die zweite Möglichkeit ist auch nicht so schön für dich. Die WD40EFRX ist als "Advanced Format" sprich 4KB Sektorgrösse unterwegs und damit kann der ESXi meines Wissens nicht umgehen. Lies dir dazu auch mal den Thread Sektorgröße 4k vs. 512 bytes im ESXi5.5-Bereich durch.

Danke, 4K sagt mir natürlich etwas...
Der PLAN war dass die Platte von VMWare nur RAW durchgereicht wird und somit keinen großen Kontakt zur Platte hat.

Ich werde morgen die Mühle mal herunterfahren und mit Linux durchchecken, davon habe ich mehr Ahnung.

Im Moment fallen mir also nur zwei-drei Ansätze ein:
-Firmware checken (mit Linux, unter ESXi nichts dazu gefunden)
-nochmals Platten tauschen und checken ob der Fehler wandert (SATA Backplane defekt?)
-Wieder zurück zu bekanntem (Linux und KVM)

Direkt am Mainboard (SAS-Controller mit dem Adapter der daraus dann 4*SATA an der Backplane macht)

Da ich keinen Fehler gefunden habe, habe ich mal ein Ubuntu-System gestartet. Bis jetzt kein Problem entdeckt. Daher habe ich Proxmox installiert und darin Openmediavault. Gerade ist das RAID5 am aufbauen. Wenn das sauber läuft und ein paar Tests besteht werde ich das so weiterverwenden. Danke für die Unterstützung die ich hier bekommen habe !

Der bei dir verbaute B120i ist ein SW-basierter bzw als Fake-Raid bezeichneter Controller. HP bietet für seine Server immer auch ein entsprechendes ESXi-ISO an, durch das viele HP-Geräte trotzdem genutzt werden können, obwohl diese Geräte offiziell von VMware nicht supportet werden. Ich würde daher den ESXi vom HP-ISO installieren, falls du das nicht bereits gemacht hast.

Hi,

ich hatte mit dem HP-ISO mit eSXi 6 installiert und den Controller im AHCI Modus betrieben. Das Fake RAID will ich nicht benutzen.

Die Idee war dass FreeNAS direkt auf die Platten zugreift und somit ZFS sinnvoll + komplett zu nutzen ist...

PS: Nun läuft noch ein paar Stunden der Aufbau eines RAID5 unter Debian, (Kein Problem mit keiner Platte derzeit), dann LVM drauf und darin dann Filesysteme. Also viel komplexer als mit ZFS.

Cool. NapIT habe ich schon 4-5 Jahre aus den Augen verloren. Bei "Solaris" kommen nostalgische Gefühle hoch. Dachte eigentlich OpenIndiana wird sterben...

Aber scheinbar lebt es nun mit OmiOS weiter... Das werde ich die nächsten Tage mal etwas studieren.

Allerdings bin ich recht skeptisch was O++++e betrifft,

Die haben erworben
-VirtualBox
-MySQL
-OpenSolaris
-OpenOffice
Und versuchen nun scheinbar möglichst viel davon in den Sand zu setzen. (MySQL ist zu stark, und bei VirtualBox wundert mich die Ausdauer)

Wenn ich aber "etwas sehr spezielles" direkt an die HW lasse, oder OmniOS virtualisiert verwende rechne ich nicht unbedingt mit Besserung. Morgen Früh ist das RAID5 initialisiert und ich werde mal mit dem schnöden Linux weitertesten.

Gea kenne ich nicht. Da er um die Ecke wohnt (denke ich) würde ich aber mal ein Bier spendieren...
