Hallo,
nach schon langem Mitlesen nun ein Problem.
Ich hatte VMware-Server 1 auf WinXP.
Nun habe ich Ver. 2.0.2 auf Gentoo-Linux 64bit. Die "alte" Festplatte von Windows habe ich per ntfs-3g in die Gentoo-Maschine gemountet und die Gäste auf eine ext3-Partition kopiert und dann per "Add Virtual Machine to Inventory" in VMware eingebunden. Die Konfigurationen werden erkannt. Jedoch kann von den Festplatten nicht gebootet werden.
Ein Gast ist Win2000 mit 2 HD's. Diese habe ich mit einer SysRescue-CD gestartet. Die Platten wurden zumindest hardwaremäßig erkannt. Also wollte ich einfach ein WinXP neu installieren um von der 2. Platte die Daten zu retten. WinXP-Setup erkennt nicht mal die Platten.
War mein Vorgehen bei der Portierung falsch? Welche Möglichkeiten habe ich, die Daten zu retten (die Gast-Maschinen kann ich wieder neu bauen).

Reine Neugier : wieso machst du den Wechsel (downgrade) von Server 1 auf Server 2 ?

theoretisch sollte das alles funktionieren - wir brauchen mehr Details ...

Das verwirrt mich jetzt. Es heißt doch allgemein immer, nimm die aktuelle Version. Ich habe kein Problem mit Ver. 1 - im Gegenteil. Da kann man die Remote-Konsole nutzen. Und eine De- und Neu-Installation ist kein Problem. Ist es empfehlenswert die Ver. 1 weiterhin zu nutzen? Wichtig ist, daß ich eine serielle Schnittstelle des Hosts zu einer Windows-Maschine durchreichen kann.

Derzeit gibt es praktisch nur einen Grund auf VMserver 2 downzugradem: USB 2 support - wer das nicht braucht ist IMHO mit VMserver 1 besser bedient.

Ich tippe mal das deine Problem daher kommen dass deine vmdk groesser als 2 Gb sind - das kann Probleme beim Kopieren per NTFS-3g geben ...

Ich habe mal auf die Schnelle genau solch eine Maschine aufgesetzt - kein Erfolg. Die Dateien scheinen wohl hinüber zu sein. Die Originale der Gäste existieren nicht mehr, nur Backups, welche nun nicht funktioniern.
Schade - wird ne Menge Arbeit kosten.

ja - aber immer die gleiche Meldung: Operating system not found

Ich werde morgen mal den Gast mit einer Rescue-CD booten und schauen, ob man an die Festplatten herankommt.

Hallo,
ich habe nun mal die beiden HD's mit der sysrescuecd gecheckt. Die erste HD ist wohl rettungslos verloren (war das Betriebssystem darauf). FDISK zeigt keine Partition an. Die zweite HD hat als Partition (lt. FDISK) SFS .
Das sagt mir überhaupt nichts - muß erst mal schauen, wie man da herankommt.
Folgendes habe ich noch versucht:
1. Neuinstallation Win2000: die beiden HD's werden erkannt, die 2. beschädigt, die 1. unformatiert - an der Stelle geht es dann nicht mehr weiter.
2. Neuinstallation WinXP: da werden die HD's erst gar nicht gefunden.

Das die Disks nicht erkannt werden, hängt höchstwahrscheinlich mit dem verwendeten SCSI-Controller in der VM zusammen. WinXP bringt glaube nur Unterstützung für den Buslogic- und W2k nur für den LSI-Controller mit.

XP hat von Haus aus weder BUSLOGIC noch LSI-treiber.

Das eine XP-installation hier nicht weiter hilft ist normal
